An Update About Updates
In the past couple of weeks, there were two pages of Original Life that didn't update on time, despite being programmed to do so. There was no missing file or anything obviously broken, like that. The comic display page just continued showing the previous page entry. When I checked the software, it showed that the new page had loaded just fine. Re-saving the entry, manually, caused the new comic to finally display as it should. Since it didn't fail consistently, I took some time in noticing it would happen more than once. Turns out there are a lot of scripts set to run on the same machines at around that time (midnight) and it would sometimes cause the update script for my comic to time out. Instead of re-running the script a few minutes later, it just never got back to it. I had to wake up the next day to find out the latest comic never displayed.

The quickest work around was for the friend who handles the server-side things, to reshuffle some of the scheduled scripts, and slightly change the time which the comic is programmed to update. So, from now on, Original Life will update at 00:15 EST, Monday and Friday, instead of 00:00 on the nose. This should clear things up and not have so many things competing for server time. I hope an extra fifteen minutes won't be too much to bear.

Ah, so that's why. I had been wondering why I wasn't seeing updates around midnight EST.

Would you guys like someone else to glance over the scripts and setup? I wouldn't mind volunteering my time...

Mmm. Well, I'm fine with it going up fifteen minutes late if that's better for you. As long as you keep updating it, I'll be pretty happy.

As for today's page: you've managed to take every stupid spiritual thing I've ever heard and pack it into one little rabbit girl. Well done, Mr. Naylor :3

Janie is my kind of daughter.. Bright, energetic, and will to explore; yet constantly questioning.

And if anyone does pull the wool over her eyes, it will only happen once.

I was up at I dunno... 1 or 2 this morning and I went "Hey, it's Monday. I'll go read Original Life and then go to bed" but IT WASN'T THERE.

I may have had a little heart attack.

15 minutes of waiting is far better than not having any comic updated at all.
Even if it was a day or two late, we should be thankful and grateful that it's recieving such dedication in the first place.
The fact that this comic is updated on a steady basis, and that you inform your viewers on hiccups to its' schedule alone is amazing. There are far too many web comics out there with inconsistent artists, who on a whim decide to quit and abandon their comic without notice. You say that a comic will continue for so long, and it does. You say a comic may be late, but WILL be updated and brought back-on-track, and it is. Kudos for integrity. 15 minutes is a MINOR change, one which shouldn't affect most people anyway. I mean, we should be sleeping at those hours anyway... >_>

Sorry Jay, but by not being English I didn't understand the "and her husband bought it" joke in your Original Life update of today...can you explain me, please ?

It's a figure of speech in American English. Going back to people buying products based on untrue claims, it now means to believe something that is untrue, to the incredulity of others.

Ahhhhhhh...ok Now I get it...Yes, we have a similar form in Italian that, translated, will be like "and her husband drank it".....we use the verb drink to express that.

Thank you for the fast explanation, Jay. Lookin forward for the next comic...

I am afraid, very afraid. The first few paragraphs I read the same crap over and over, just a slight rearrangement of the words used. Then after stating "I didn't say "back to work", she said "putting Americans back to work" three times! It is already a foregone conclusion she thinks the American people are stupid, but this little speech goes beyond that. She is playing the "Let's Make A Deal" game of what's behind the curtain, and doing it with individual state officials! WTF!?!? we need to pass the bill first, then tell you what's in it!?!?

Hey I've always had a question for you. In the last chapter of Better Days when Fisk is talking to Sparky, what exactly is going on there? What is Sparky doing now and who was that in the bed? That page always confused me.

Also, thank you for the new catalogue thing. Love Tommy/Lucy. Can't wait for more.

Scheduled Posting

I have a similar issue with post scheduling on a website I write for. I'm not sure what CMS you use, but ours seems to simply be a time-zone and syntax problem. I have to keep in mind to schedule an hour early for me.

More often than not, it's a slight syntax problem. Our scheduler is text based like "08:27:51 03-19-2010". If anything is at all slightly off from typing that in, then it simply won't post it and will not tell us that something is wrong.

Again, I'm not sure what CMS you use,(Wordpress, drupal or built from the ground up) but a recent update may have reset some simple back-end settings that may be overlooked. Check the changelog and see if anything dealing with posting or scheduling was done.

Yep... Elizabeth has the right idea, especially in this day and age.

Course... it also helps that Fisk has been heavily trained arm-to-arm combat tactics. And, he's also got a strong defend-the-family ethic as given by his pummeling of Mr. Longfellow who attacked his Mother.

And..., lets face it, Elizabeth has found a way for Fisk to discuss issues of Faith with Janie.

I am very impressed, Jay.

Your character of Fisk has not just grown into a mature adult, but one with good head on his shoulders, with an honest heart and soul.

It's refreshing; You're one of the few comic artists who doesn't dumb down their adult males (unlike most TV shows who's writers make the Dad a bubble headed moron).

Thanks! This is why I love coming back to your comics again and again.

Haha... I'm with you! And, I love the "OMGOMGOMG" look on her face! That is great!!!

If Fisk is senior to her at the agency, he might just take Elizabeth on a second honeymoon in Baja (I assume Baja California).

Hahaha... Now THAT I'd love to see!

And, I wish I knew if "Red" was her real name or nickname? I don't think this is Amy from the Summer Camp comic found in the Adult Catalog.

"And, I love the "OMGOMGOMG" look on her face! That is great!!"

You know, you really gotta wonder about a girl who pines that much for a guy who's not only happily married, but also has kids. Makes you wonder just how far she'd go.

Given that Jay has stated that he doesn't want to go too much in depth into what Fisk does with his work, I don't know how much time will be devoted to the "job" portion of this assignment. It will probably be an amusing an akward series of events for poor Red. Who knows, Jay may even have Fisk say no to the job (the extra person was optional), but that wouldn't be nearly as funny.

Well, now seeing today's installment I wonder if the mouse-lady will (and pardon the pun) squeal on Red and give Fisk a head's-up.

Hell, I know I would. No one should be permitted to be a home wrecker...

I hope she didn't. It will mean so much more (if she even attempts it, given today's strip) coming from Fisk unprompted.

Prior to today's strip, I considered how much he loves Elizabeth and his kids, how little any of them know about what he does, and then, of course, the whole thing with Sam and Sheila and Sam's son, (Fisk's half-brother now) when he was growing up. I don't even have to look back to recall the angry look on his face when he came in and the hurt *I* felt for Sheila when she saw it. (And while I don't go for guilt trips, I absolutely loved the effing enormous one she laid on Fisk: "...we'll only ever have her for our mother!")

Yes, I envisioned Fisk verbally taking Red apart, piece by piece, for even suggesting he'd stray.. Leave it to Jay to find a way to put her in her place without him having to say a single word to her about it.

You know, your comments makes me curious. I wonder whatever became of Ryan? I mean, we know that he works at the same job Fisk does, but with how much Jay's been showing the company lately you think he'd have made another appearance by now. Did he die between webcomics or something?

Well, well... It seems Miss Red has a conscience after all. I am pleased.

Another member expressed pleasant surprise that Fisk grew up with a good, solid personality and a good head on his shoulders. Considering that Fisk has always seemed to be your alter ego, Jay, I am not at all surprised that he should reflect you. Nicely done all around. This and Better Days remain my two favorite webcomics.. The characters you create are the most "real" of any comic I've seen, which, considering they're all furs, is saying quite a lot.

Bravo, Mr. Naylor. Bravo, indeed! Thank you for your work!
