To The Future...

I was so into my vacation when I came home, there were some things I forgot to touch on in my last post. It regards the future of my comics. What a fine excuse for another post!

New Worlds
I still get a lot of mail about New Worlds, asking about when it will be updated again and what's going on with it. Eventually I need to overhaul the webpage so there is no ambiguity about what I eventually plan to do when I have the time. It's a good reminder of how many people don't read this, and that's understandable. Of the small handful of webcomics I read, I generally don't read up on the artist past the comic they post, either. But nonetheless, for those curious: In my spare time I've been taking the story and writing it up in text form, with the intention of illustrating it in the future. I hope to have it up and rolling by the beginning of next year in it's new incarnation. It's allowing me to explore the world I created in the depth I originally wanted to, and reveal more about characters during the course of the plot. I've already got the plot up to the point where we last left Rouchambeau, written out in novel format. It includes several little interactions and segments that I wanted to originally include in the comic, but left out due to the way they might linger the plot of a comic that posts one page at a time. There are also several edits I need to make to the comic, including some of the characters. I will be changing Roark's name. I assigned the name at first, before reading The Fountainhead and I don't want anyone to draw any association with the hero from this novel, as they don't really resemble one another. I'm also toying with the idea of changing Jupiter's last name, since I'd been going with a Roman/Greek theme for most of their surnames since I created him. The strange infusion of his very Irish surname seems very out of place.

Better Days
When I look at Better Days, now, I think of it almost as a very long term experiment, almost like a testbed for trying out different style evolutions and forcing myself to draw characters over and over. It has changed so much from when it first started, and I've changed so much, also. I've learned about the kinds of things I like to create in comics, and the kinds of things I thought I would like to create in comics, but ended up not enjoying. There were chapters that were very hard to push through, even though they seemed really neat in my mind when I came up with them as concepts. Some of them just didn't pace real well when released only two pages per week. Some I just didn't enjoy illustrating at all. It took a lot of discipline to keep the posting schedule on track through these (something I'm kind of proud of). I found that I've started losing my taste for many of the extremely serious plot arcs. It's because of this that I've removed most of the stories that reveal explicitely what Fisk does for a living, from the future production schedule. I'd rather keep it something a little more mysterious, and when I thought about them, they usually just deal with situations more so than characters, which is... bad. I've been there and I don't like it. Chapter 23 is going to be the last really "heavy" chapter, in terms of it involving life and death moments, and I consider it kind of vital to explaining how Persia ends up where she is.

After Chapter 23, there are only three more chapters that I plan to do before the comic will "conclude". I expect this will happen around the middle of next year, maybe a little later. It's hard to say this far out. The characters are beginning to settle into their adult lives, which are the "better days" I intended them all to reach eventually. At least in my experience, adult life is far more rewarding and stimulating than childhood ever was. But I won't be done with the Better Days world by far. The posting schedule will be replaced with another comic that I've had planned out over the last month or so, involving some of the same characters, as well as some new ones. It'll be the sorts of pages and story arcs I've discovered I really enjoy doing while drawing Better Days over the past five and a half years. They're not really serious, and they involve humor and extremely cute things. For this reason, there'll be no year by year advancement of time. I know I said that I wouldn't do a comic like that, but, I think after doing a comic with a progressive timeline, I can sort of "relax" into a comic that doesn't age its characters. I'm also going to work on a nicer finishing style than just flat black and white line work.

That's all for now! Back to work.

Better Days has been a great ride, and I'm interested to see how you end it. And I'll be following along in the continuation/sequel/whateverthing.

This coming from a non-furry

Better Days has been an amazing journey to watch unfold through the years and I too would love to see how you conclude it all.

Thank you so much for Fisk, Lucy, Beth, and the gang. <3

Better days is by far on my top 5, in fact, top 2 is not the top of all web comics. I love it, and it's truly amazing so far.

New Worlds I admit I haven't been keeping up to date on but that means I can read a bunch at once and not annoy you with pesky emails of "moar" =D

Either way, keep up the great work!

Better Days concluding?

I love the work you're doing, and frankly the characters growing up as they have is a positive growth in my eyes.

The humor of Better Days, that still occurs, is a wonderful aspect of your work. I know you indicate that the BD's cast will re-appear, and that you plan to conclude the story line; as a reader I have to accept that's your choice.

But..., okay, it's a bit gut wrenching to get this news. It's like finding a friend is moving away for good.

Looking back at all the chapters you've produced, from elementary school age, pre-teen, high school age and into adulthood, your characters of Lucy and Fisk are so complex! They're rich! I ponder what you have now in mind?

Will Fisk continue with this work? Will he suffer the fait of his father? Will Lucy & Tommy get hitched or not? Will Lucy (despite the contraception) get pregnant too, like Jessica? Will there be a new BD's generation? Will Persia be cleaned up or will the worse happen?

So many question now.. One thing for sure though; I'm a fan for life of Better Days Jay, and I congratulate you for some awesome creativity.

woot! i've been wonderin' about new worlds myself. i couldn't find anything on the site so i guess i'll ask... forgive me if i'm one of those people who just keeps askin' when the info is right under his nose... are you planning on changing it to a format similar to your Haukaiu the Hero series? if so i think that's a good idea! i think it'd fit that story alot better than the traditional frame by frame webcomic.

as for better days <3 i've been with this comic since eirly in Chapter 7 "Of Mice and Idiots". i've been missing the comic reliefe lately so i'm happy to hear that the drama is calming down.

keep up the great work jay!

Not gonna lie, when i read "conclude" under the "Better Days" header i clenched my chest where my heart is. 3 more arcs huh? Well this at least keeps me prepared for the eventual ending, unlike another anthro comic i came to love (Purple Pussy by Dave Kelly) just flatout abruptly ending.

But at least the world isn't going away, which makes me a happy fan :)

Keep up the fantastic work man, been following your work for years now

Web Comics alive?

Another several on-line comics in limbo:

Wild Frontier

Crikey Duck: A Webbed Comic

Akaelae

MoonDog comics

I'm sure there are others, but these are four that seem to have frozen in time (Wild Frontier staff wrote me an said it's still alive, but... it's still on the same panel).

Sorry to See it Go

I've been a fan of Better Days for about two years now, and while it's sad to hear that it'll be ending soon, I really think that you've created something to be proud of.

I've thoroughly enjoyed over and over again each chapter. I've read and re-read them several times, enjoying both the humour and the seriousness in each. It's not very often that a comic can combine both drama and humour together, but truly, you pull it off.

A Good Experience

Although it would be premature to mourn the eventual conclusion to your comic when I have no idea of when that far off day would be, I still will miss it when its inevitable end has come. Just as reading such dailies like Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes has touched my life, reading Better Days has been an enriching experience for me.

Truth be told, I look forward to the next step in New Worlds' progression. I was sad when I first read that you could no longer afford the time for it while working on your other projects. The dedication you put into your work is something to behold and certainly separates you from the pack. For whatever it's worth, you have my respect, sir.

I know I'll miss Better Days when it reaches its conclusion, but it's also something to look forward to in my opinion. And New Worlds.. well, we can only see how it goes with that.

Glad to hear you won't be completely discontinuing New Worlds, and I look forward to reading it in novel form (think you might get into writing novels next?).

And while I often wondered just how far Better Days would go, I will say that it causes me no pain to hear the current version will be ending in barely a year. I watched a lot of my favorite shows mainly to see their endings, and I have confidence that you'll end it in a way your fans will appreciate. And even though you're probably already getting plenty of these, I'm happy to have come across it and be able to read a comic with an excellent plot and with characters I can empathize with. I hope that after concluding it, you will perhaps leave it up for us to continue to enjoy.

All's well that ends well.

The style of Better Days, compared to the first many chapters, now feels almost strained. Although I love the comic, I prefer the early years of it more than the adult ones.
It's always sad to hear that an artist is deciding to end one of their most recognized creations, but it was bound to happen one day eventually. You at least gave us the courtesy of a heads-up, and an insight of what to look forward to.
While I can understand that the fixed-timeline comic of Better Days will eventually come to a close, perhaps you would still create a few loosy-goosy single pages, depicting brief insights of moments in those characters' past. It'd be good to see more moments of Fisk and Lucy as kids and teens again, caught in single-page moments of situational humor or seriousness. That way Better Days would never truly die off, but still unfold mini-stories once in a while. Kinda like looking into a photo album.
Thanks for continuing to share your art with the world. It will always be remembered.

6-9 months left to better days !!! :'(

Hey Jay,

I don't post often but I must say, I too have hope that better days would continue for ever. I've been reading it almost religiously for the last 4 years.

I understand that it must come to an end, but it will sadden me for sure.

Better days is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is moving with it humour, seriousness, sadness and joy.

So much of it as roots deep in the way our world work and yet, it show them is such a perfect manner, in such a strait and simple way that we instantly feel link with it. As if you draw your inspiration directly for our lives.

Personally, the chapters "Brother's Arms", "All the wrong places", "Lucy Black" and "Roll Play" really touch my life on a fundamental level.

I'll be with you and better days until the end, and probably after.

Keep enjoying your work and good luck (it never hurts)

Frank

a big thank you....

I've been a fan of better days from the beginning. I've never posted a comment on your journal but I've always kept tabs. Better Days has been an amazing journey for us your fans, and I'm sure for you as well. I've loved watching you grow as an artist and story-teller. You have an amazing and unique style. I, like most of your fans am sad that Better days is soon ending, but not disappointed. Every good tale needs a conclusion, and I'm eager to see what is in your future. I will be hard parting with Fisk, Lucy, and all your characters, but I guess if we ever need to see their faces again we can slip back into the archives. Not many people can show such self induced dedication as you have, you have pushed this story along through your own determination and will. Not many could do that, and do it so well. I know it's a little premature (as we still do have 3 more chapters to look forward to) But I just wanted to give you my thanks and gratitude. I have been thoroughly enlightened, saddened, thrilled, shocked, confused, excited, perplexed, troubled, amused, and genuinely entertained in every way throughout the years. There may never be another web-comic that will ever rise above Better days in my books, but due to its captivation it's held over me you have gained a fan for life, I will always keep a watch (and a subscription) on your work. Thank you for it all Jay, and good luck with all that you offer in the future. :)

Terrified for Fisk

Looking at today's strip.., Why do I suddenly have this feeling of dread for the B&W cat we know as Fisk?

I hope to hell my gut is lying.

As the old saying goes, "all good things must come to an end." I came across your 'Better Days' story sometime last year and I found it to be an interesting story and made an effort to kept up with it. I've enjoyed the way you've developed your characters, and told a story that brought me back for more. I'm glad that it's something you were able to satisfied in producing for so long, consistently, and have gained a such a strong sense of accomplishment from your work on it. Knowing that you plan to bring the story to a close my only sense of disappointment come in the knowledge that in the end this story that has been so well developed, and so entertaining will be an obscure and relatively unknown work.

Ello.

Um... hey. I just started reading Better Days about a week ago, and I gotta say, it's pretty cool. A bit sad to hear it's almost done, though. Ah well, that's okay. :D Other than that, great comics, Jay. I really enjoy reading them.

Just, just, wow.

I browsed through maybe a hundred comics and Better Days was the only one I ended up reading. It's the favourite of my list of subscriptions, though I'll admit I better enjoyed the innocence and learning stages of the first chapters, until Fisk heads off to the Army.

Rather bummed you left New Worlds at such a point, but I'm not one to complain at something that is being freely given =P At least I know it will continue in future, and give me something else to look forward to once Better Days concludes.

I applaud your ability to write a strip(Or graphic novel I suppose is better) with a definitive beginning and end. I'll reserve my thoughts on the ending for when it actually runs around, but I don't think I'll be disappointed. Some ideas can go on forever, but for something like Better Days I think I'll enjoy where we'll be left off. There won't be any jumping the shark and I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be a 'happy ending' vibe after all each character has been through.

Once Better Days is finished, would you be selling a completed printed works?
The online portion is great and that's it's free and all, but I'd be willing to pay for the completed works to put in my book shelf.
Just a thought.
I hate to see it end. I hate to see anything good end. But I know it has to at one point. I must say though, I'm very happy I found it. Amazing art work, story and characters you don't forget. Please keep up the good work until the bitter end.

Holy shit! I seriously NEVER want to ever cross Fisk

I don't know if he's pulling on the memory of his mother being raped by that school principal, or the war and secret training, but....

Shit! Dude I do not want to be in your way when I see your ears turned down. Taking out two thugs without batting an eye?!

Wow!

Re: Holy shit! I seriously NEVER want to ever cross Fisk

Referring to "me" as the character in the comic is one of those peeves of mine that gets under my skin. He's not me. He's just a character.
