There’s been this idea in the back of my head over the last year. It’s one of those ideas that lingers and sometimes fades, but you keep revisiting it. It eventually becomes too dominant to ignore. Your inspiration betrays your more cautious mind, and eventually convinces your rational mind to join the side of ballsy indulgence. This time has come. The fact that this could either be a colossal mistake or an outstanding expansion opportunity is irrelevant to where my bullheaded stubborn determination, fuelled by an unstoppable wellspring of inspiration, is concerned. I didn’t get to the happy state I’m in, now, by compromising my inspiration to the current of the mob.
UPDATE: This is an April Fools post. Despite there being a subsequent entry mentioning this fact, people are still posting forelorn and heartbroken comments to this entry as if it's real.
Over the next few months, Better Days will be undergoing a seismic shift. It’s done me well with over 400 pages, gradually shaping my style and improving it bit by bit. I’ve decided to use it as a means of getting better in my next area of self-improvement. Chapter 18 will be about Fisk coming home and a bit of fallout in the aftermath of his war experience. Once it is concluded, the Better Days plot will resume as a fresh web-comic with the characters re-cast as human cartoons. “Chapter 19” will be appearing as“Chapter 1” of Volume 2. Volume 2 will appear as a new link in the Entertainment Menu on the front page, as well as the two existing web-comicdisplay pages for Better Days and New Worlds. I realize this may cause some consternation amongst the fan ranks, but bear in mind: Do you like something just because it’s furry? Or do you like something because it’s good? It’ll be the same comic… sort of. I haven’t decided how this is going to affect the pornographic spin-offs that appear in the catalog, yet.
I’ve had a lot of fun scribbling up brainstorms and designs for human versions of the usual characters. A lot of these are still preliminary, but I’ve started adding regular practice into my usual sketch warm-up routine each day. This is a first-stab at Fisk and Lucy as human beings. Fisk’s face looks rather young and Lucy’s hair doesn’t translate quite as well, so I’ll probably experiment with a few different styles for her. She looks like she’s fresh off the prairie or something.

This was one of the better ones of Amy. She translates very well, here. Originally intended to be a freckled, Southern stereotype, he rexact archetype was more difficult to visually convey as an anthropomorphic cat.

I think Beth took the cuteness prize when I adapted her. She just fell right into it like a natural. Black lipstick is usually somewhat off-putting on real people, but on a cartoon person, it looks somewhat cute.

Here’s Sheila in a quaint little super-mom pose.

This is a first shot at Jessica and Robert. Jessica looks highly stylized, here, and I made her more “sly” looking than her usual stupid-happy. I didn’t originally intend for Robert to look like a chiseled specimen of the Master Race, but he looked better as a blonde. I’ll probably forgo the facing cheek-line in any future depictions.

I love your art. I've been a fan for the past year now, and I just love it.
I like the new human versions of your characters. It's up to you if you want to keep them human.
Keep up the good work.

I'm loving Beth most of all, and Amy. Beth definitely wins as the cutest :)
I'm definitely looking forward to this. Definitely.

What I think was interesting is how racial/ethic issues translated to species issues in the Better Days world. It almost makes me wonder if when you take it OUT of the furry world, with everyone at least being the same species, will that make things less complicated or more complicated?
And I will be honest, it was the furry thing that brought me to the comic in the first place. However it was your characters and storytelling that kept me coming back. I don't represent your entire fanbase, I'm sure, but I don't think too many will care if you move from the furry to the human style of comics.

Date nonwithstanding...
As a longtime fan of the comic I had a few initial reactions to this little announcement. After some speculation I realized that yes, I would still enjoy the comic if it was de-fured. However I feel that being furry is one of the things that makes Better days stand out, and without that it would run the risk of being 'just another human comic' of which I could probably find 10-20 in a few seconds searching. My second reaction was that I think that making the change mid-comic is perhaps a lot more damaging than the descision to start drawing a human-based comic by itself. That said not sure Jay's schedule could hold up to doing a third comic on top of the other two although maybe that's just my selfish desire to leave him more free time for side-projects.
Oh well, wherever you decide to take BD Jay, long as you keep up the high level of quality and the solidity of character I enjoy, i'll tag along for the ride.

I'm holding off until the 2nd before I decide to believe you, heh.
That said, I actually rather like the "translations" of Amy and Beth.

It's interesting seeing these folks in a different style.

As the creator of the comic, it's your choice, but I just want to say I'll be sad to see the previous format go.

So coming from someone who doesn’t care for furry art in general, I don’t think the change would feel right. The characters look is a part of who they are, especially after to much time. While it is common for art styles to change it is usually very subtle. Most of the time, as a reader, you don’t even notice until you go back and look at the earlier stuff. But such a dramatic shift in style is pretty off putting. Imagine if Charles Schulz had, halfway through his career, started drawing Peanuts in the style of Sin City. Schulz may have enjoyed the art style more but it wouldn’t have fit the world he had created.
If you do decide to go ahead with the change I will obviously keep reading. After all, the art isn’t what drew me in to begin with. It is just something to consider.
Oh, also, if you do make the shift be you might want to add a panel with an explanation at the start of Volume 2, otherwise you will constantly be getting confused email from new readers, heh.

I will say, however, that much as I enjoy the storyline and characters and would continue to do so, part of the appeal for me is that the characters are furry.
April 1 2007, 08:04:38 UTC 5 years ago
I'm also leery of sudden, somewhat dramatic changes to something I like... too many times I've seen it herald a huge downgrade in enjoyability. But if you feel the need and you're not doing it just for the sake of being different or conforming, that's what you've got to do.
Also it's April 1st so this is all probably some joke, but eh, when I'm tired typing rambling stuff helps me settle my brain a little.

furry to human something get lost.
But i´ve you think that it is better for you and BD do it.

100% the right thing to do
We talked about your moving in this direction a number of times, and I'm really, really glad you're finally taking the plunge. I still think it would be best if you went 100% human though. You also talked about purging the galleries and redrawing the early chapters as humans at the Obama/420 rally. Are you still thinking about that?

Re: 100% the right thing to do
It'd be stretching my current skill level to try to depict their vapid, glazed, stupid expressions with such unnerving regularity as would be necessary.April 1 2007, 09:43:48 UTC 5 years ago
